<biogHist>
<abstract>Graham Burrows had an international reputation in diverse research areas including the mood and anxiety disorders, chronic pain and psychosomatics, and hypnosis. He was influential in the establishment of modern psychopharmacology in Australia. In 1967 he moved to Victoria where he joined he Mental Health Authority, working in a number of psychiatric hospitals. Burrows was appointed to the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Melbourne in 1973, becoming foundation Professor and Director of Psychiatry at the Austin and Repatriation Hospitals ten years later. He was noted as an innovator in areas of clinical practice such as eating disorders, spinal injuries, HIV/AIDS and PTSD. Burrows prolific contributor to psychiatric literature in Australia and overseas. Organisations in which he played active roles included the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists (of which he was President), the Australasian Society for Psychiatric Research, the World Federation for Mental Health, the Australian Medical Association (Victoria), and the Collegium Internationale Neuro-Psychopharmacologicum. He was an enthusiastic participant and office bearer in many community health and mental health organisations. </abstract>
