Early in his career he was stationed at the State Research Farm, Werribee, Victoria, where he started research into improving livestock production through genetic improvement, artificial breeding, nutrition and husbandry. A study tour in 1949 resulted in a strategic plan for livestock production research in Victoria and the setting up of an animal husbandry research centre at Werribee. In the 1950s he initiated the first project in Australia to produce piglets free of Mycoplasma pneumonia and was involved in the planning of a number of veterinary research facilities throughout the state. Wishart was appointed in 1960 to the planning committee of the Faculty of Veterinary Science for the re-establishment of the BVSc at The University of Melbourne, including the planning for the Veterinary Clinical Centre at Werribee.
