She worked for the Meteorological Office in the United Kingdom for several years, enjoying some celebrity in broadcasting weather reports. On returning to Australia Kemp rejoined the Bureau on a temporary basis. For nine years Weathertex, her meteorological consultancy with Don Douglas, focussed on storms affecting the New South Wales coast, particularly rainfall and the implications for coastal beaches and engineering. Kemp wrote extensively on the climatology of large waves on New South Wales coast and developed strong links to the coastal engineering community.
