Bill Hartley established the Australian Registry of Wildlife Health, the Pathology Register of Diseases of Production and Companion Animals, and the Pathology Register of Diseases of Farm Animals. His research interests included neuropathology, poisonous plants, perinatal mortality of large animals, protozoology and comparative pathology of wildlife. Hartley identified many disease entities, characterised novel pathogens and was often the first to recognise the emergence of new diseases in Australasia. Appointments included to the Wallaceville Animal Research Station (New Zealand), the Equine Research Station, Newmarket (United Kingdom), the School of Veterinary Science at the University of Sydney, and the Taronga Conservation Society Australia. Hartley contributed to the United Nations Development Program as a consultant pathologist in Turkey, 1968-1969. He was also a consultant pathologist to the United States Department of Agriculture for more than 18 years, where he provided expert advice regarding plant toxicities. In 2004 he donated many of his slides, as the W. J. Hartley Pathology Collection, to the University of Sydney.
