<biogHist>
<abstract>Tom Hartley was noted for his research on the family Rutaceae in Australia, Papua New Guinea, New Caledonia and Malaysia. He published revisions of several large genera in the family, including <span style="font-style:italic">Maclurodendron</span>, <span style="font-style:italic">Neoschmidia</span>, <span style="font-style:italic">Zanthoxylum</span>, <span style="font-style:italic">Acronychia</span> and <span style="font-style:italic">Melicope</span>. His collections from Australia, Papua New Guinea and Pacific islands are in the Australian National Herbarium in Canberra. In retirement Hartley continued his research on the floras of Australia and New Caledonia.</abstract>
