Peter Funk was a meteorologist who pioneered the development of a new generation of all-wave and net radiation sensors. leading to greater understanding of radiation processes on land and ocean surfaces. Having migrated to Australia from Austria in 1956 he joined the CSIRO Division of Meteorological Physics as Research Scientist. Under his direction, the Division was recognised as a leading research facility in the field of solar and terrestrial radiation. Funk invented what became known as the "Funk Radiometer" which, having been licensed for manufacture by CSIRO in 1960, was in production for over 50 years.
