His research centred in the families Droseraceae and Myrtaceae (particularly the genera Drosera, Agonis, Chamelaucium and Darwinia). He was heavily involved in the creation of FloraBase, the on-line database of the Western Australian flora. In addition he was a strong advocate for the repatriation of type specimens and of the necessity for voucher specimens.
