<abstract>John Maconochie worked for most of his career at the Alice Springs Herbarium, Northern Territory (part of the Arid Zone Research Institute 1968 - 1978). His research was principally on <span style="font-style:italic">Acacia</span>, <span style="font-style:italic">Hakea</span>, cycads, and plants toxic to cattle. The substantial collections he made in Australia are now in the Northern Territory Herbarium. Maconochie was working with the United Nations in Somalia when he died.</abstract>
