Mike Lazarides was regarded as the leading botanist on the flora of Australia's arid and drier tropical regions. He was also an expert on the grass family (Poaceae), and published revisions of Australian Chlorideae and the genera Eragrostis, Eriachne and Triodia. Between 1949 and 1992 he made 35 collecting trips, mostly in Western Australia, Northern Territory, Queensland and South Australia. Lazarides was renowned for the quality of his collections which were accompanied by extensive field notes with information on abundance, habit and habitat. Over 6,200 of his collections are in the Australian National Herbarium. Publications included comprehensive works on Australian and southeast Asian grasses, weeds, economic plants and contributions to the Flora of Australia. He described over 120 new taxa including six new genera.
