<abstract>The patent for the invention Hearing Prosthesis (application number 1983018194) was granted on 24 November 1987. This was an important milestone in the development of the bionic ear (cochlear implant). The patent was awarded by the Australian Patent Office in respect of the application (on 20 August 1982) by The University of Melbourne for an invention entitled "Receiver/Stimulator for Hearing Prosthesis", with the inventors named as Hugh McDermott, Peter Blamey, Raymond Black, Yit Chow (Joe) Tong, David Money, James Patrick and Graeme Clark. The effective date of the patent was recorded as 27 April 1979. A further application was made on 3 February 1987 by Raymond Marginson, Vice-Principal, on behalf of the University. Although the patent was due to expire on 22 August 2003, the patent ceased on 10 April 1997 (publication date).</abstract>
