<abstract>The patent for the invention Speech Processor (application number 1981078481) was granted on 6 June 1985. This was an important milestone in the development of the bionic ear (cochlear implant). The patent was awarded by the Australian Patent Office in respect of the application (on 12 December 1980) by the Commonwealth of Australia for an invention entitled "Improvements in Speech Processors", with the inventors named as James Patrick, Graeme Clark, Yit Chow (Joe) Tong and Peter Seligman. The Commonwealth subsequently lodged the complete application on 30 June 1981. The effective date of the patent was recorded as 11 December 1981 and it ceased on 31 July 1997.</abstract>
