This includes hypotheses on latitudinal gradients in species diversity, niche theory, the phylogeny of Platyhelminthes, and the taxonomy of trematodes and monogeneans. He was the first to supply quantitative evidence for the enormous species diversity of marine parasites in tropical (coral reef) waters, and for differences in latitudinal gradients between endo- and ectoparasites. He is a member of the editorial boards of Acta Parasitologica and Folia Parasitologica. Over 2,200 specimens of monogenean parasites of fishes collected by Rohde were donated to Queensland Museum in 1998.
