His research on reptilian ecology has substantially clarified the ways in which microevolutionary processes determine major life-history transitions and has illuminated the ecological role played by reptiles in natural ecosystems. More recently he has increasingly focussed on major conservation issues such as the biology, impact and control of invasive species such as the cane toad. His interest lies in how results of 'academic' research translate into effective conservation. Shine has published award-winning texts on herpetology and served on the editorial boards of major herpetology journals.
