He worked for a number of mining exploration companies, as a field geologist, in senior management positions, and as a Board member. As Director General of the Department of Mines and Energy, South Australia, he played a major role in the opening up of the Cooper Basin oil and gas field and the Olympic Dam ore body. He also served on a number of industry advisory councils. Webb was Chancellor of the University of Adelaide from 1998 to 2000.
