<biogHist>
<abstract>Joyce Fildes established the Microanalytical Service at the John Curtin School of Medical Research, Australian National University, which served all the medical researchers at the School. Her work involved research into the chemical action of drugs, such as anti-malaria drugs and anti-bacterial immunosuppressant drugs to help in surgical grafting. Fildes studied the use of additive reagents in organic elemental combustion and improved the Kjeldahl sealed tube procedure for nitrogen determination. She also adapted and improved methods in commercial analysers based on gas chromatographic determinations of C, H, and N. Fildes was active in the Royal Australian Chemical Institute, serving as Chairman of the Analytic Division.</abstract>
