Allen Yung was widely recognised for his expertise in the research and treatment of contagious diseases and was renowned as a diagnostician and mentor. After his family escaped from China in the 1930s Yung was sent to school in Hobart, Tasmania. Having qualified in medicine at the University of Melbourne, he was for several years on the staff of the Royal Melbourne Hospital and the Royal Children's Hospital, Melbourne. Yung joined the staff of the Fairfield Infectious Diseases Hospital in Melbourne in 1964. At the time of its closure in 1996 he was Chief of Medicine and Dean of the clinical school for the University of Melbourne and Monash University. During this time the Hospital changed from being an isolation hospital for patients with contagious diseases to an internationally recognised centre for clinical care, education and research. Between 1996 and when he retired in 2003, Yung was on the staff of the Royal Melbourne Hospital.
