He worked in private industry for nearly 20 years before being offered opportunity to curate the aquatic insect specimens held by the CSIRO Division of Entomology. In addition he identified aquatic macroinvertebrates for the New South Wales Environmental Protection Authority. In the 1960s he collaborated with John Watson on the description of Australia's dragonflies (Odonata), studying their taxonomy, morphology, larval biology and potential role as biological indicators. Theischinger is a Research Associate of the Australian Museum and a Visiting Fellow of the Smithsonian Institution, Washington DC.
