<biogHist>
Heinar Streimann was one of Australia's leading bryologists, specialising in mosses. After working briefly for the Bureau of Meteorology in Melbourne (1959-1961), he was employed for eleven years by the Forests Department in Bulolo and the Division of Botany in Lae, Papua New Guinea. It was during this time that he became interested in botany, particularly cryptogams and island floras. During his term as Botanist at the Australian National Herbarium Streimann expanded the cryptogam collections from 14 packets to one of the largest in Australia, comprising more than 65,000 specimens. He collected widely in eastern Australia and on Australia's off-shore islands. With Judith Curnow he published (1989) the Catalogue of the mosses of Australia and its external territories, a milestone in our knowledge of Australian mosses. Streimann's exsiccatae of cryptogams were issued as 17 fascicles representing 500 numbers.
