James Pollard wrote a weekly nature column 'Denizens of the bush' for the Western Australian Newspaper between 1923 and 1937 under the name 'Mopoke' His articles fostered an interest in native plants and animals that proved popular and sustained. Pollard's membership of the Western Australian Naturalists Club, the Royal Australasian Ornithologists Union and the Gould League provided him with access to naturalists on whose expertise he relied. The column was significant for the way in which it provided a bridge between amateur observation and expert opinion.
