On moving to the University of Queensland after completing his PhD, Pearson continued to work on diplostome trematodes while also studying the highly diverse but largely unknown heterophyids, parasitic on native birds and rats. It was in the revision of sections of the Heterophyidae (usually tiny and always difficult) that Pearson made his most important contributions to taxonomy. He collected widely in Australia and Southeast Asia.
