After completing his PhD, Hanson spent several years at Harvard and Monash Universities before joining the University of Queensland School of Chemistry in 1987. Here he set up the Centre for Magnetic Resonance which over 25 years became the best EPR facility in Australia with an international reputation. One of his many important scientific contributions was to establish EPR spectroscopy as an essential tool for electronic structure analysis of paramagnetic compounds and for the correlation of electronic structure with geometry. His understanding of the physics of metal complexes and electron spin and the mathematics to describe these phenomena led to the development of the Sophe suite of programs to simulate EPR spectra. These programs were pivotal in his scientific endeavours and ensured that the University of Queensland and Australian researchers were at the forefront in the application of EPR within their research programs.
