He is a leading authority on whale and dolphin biology. Much of his research has been in remote areas including Antarctica. Bryden has been a member of a number of committees related to animal research and welfare including the Antarctic Science Advisory Committee and the Zoological Parks Board of New South Wales. He was the founding Director of the Australian Marine Mammal Research Centre.
