During his post-doctoral studies at the University of Western Ontario he wrote, with Leo Manzer, a review of the 'trans influence' of platinum chemistry which became the seminal paper on the subject. On returning to Australia Appleton joined the staff of the Research School of Chemistry at ANU and in 1974 joined the University of Queensland from which he retired as Associate Professor. For many years he was Assistant Director of Studies for the Faculty of Science. Appleton published extensively, and his work with others led to the development of a new generation of platinum anticancer drugs.
