Don McGillivray attended the School of Forestry at the Australian National University after gaining his BSc. After five years with the New South Wales Forestry Commission, he joined the New South Wales National Herbarium as Botanist (later Senior Botanist). Increasingly his interests centred on <span style="font-style:italic">Grevillea</span>, Australia's third largest plant genus. In 1993, with R. O. Makinson, McGillivray published the first revision of <span style="font-style:italic">Grevillea</span> in 150 years. His interests extended to botanical nomenclature and the history of Australian botany. McGillivray was renowned for his meticulous and exhaustive work in defining morphological characters and gathering primary data. He was the foundation Secretary of the Australian Systematic Botany Society.
