He was surveyor or station leader for three over-wintering parties at Mawson Station, Antarctica, 1956-1957, 1960-1961 and 1980-1981, as well as being a member of summer operations teams for four years, 1961-1962, 1962-1963, 1964-1965 and 1979-1980. During these periods he made a number of pioneering surveys. His contributions have made a significant impact on the fields of regional geochronology, petrology, tectonics geology, orogeny, glaciology, geomagnetism, and palaeomagnetism.
