After joining the company in 1951 he undertook mineral exploration particularly for iron ore in Western Australia. His work in the Kimberleys resulted in the first comprehensive geological maps of the area. During his career he initiated and oversaw the development of numerous significant ore bodies which included the use of innovative survey and drilling techniques. He was the first recipient of the Joe Harms Medal, awarded by the Geological Society of Australia for excellence in activities related to mineral exploration.
