In 1881 he acted as guide to a railway surveying party in the Gulf Country in the Lawn Hill area, where he took up land and discovered mineral deposits not commercially developed for a further 100 years. Hann left the property in 1896 during the economic downturn and went to Western Australia. He explored much of the State while searching for pastoral land and mineral deposits, with some support from the Western Australian Government. His expeditions extended as far as the Petermann Ranges in Central Australia and Oodnadatta, South Australia. He named over 500 geographical features.
