Leslie Hall was one of Australia's top bat experts with a comprehensive knowledge of many aspects of their biology, from anatomy to behaviour and conservation. His interest in bats started in the 1960s when he indulged in speleology and was employed by the CSIRO Division of Wildlife Research. From there he moved in 1974 to the Department of Anatomy (later Veterinary Anatomy) at the University of Queensland. Hall's research interests extend to monotremes and marsupials. He has published over 200 scientific papers, including contributions to the <span style="font-style:italic">Fauna of Australia</span>. In addition Hall readily contributed to community and conservation groups and was a prolific writer for popular scientific publications. He was a member of the Australasian Bat Society and of the IUCN Chiroptera Specialist Group.
