After completing her PhD at the University of Auckland she took up a Research Fellowship at the National Herbarium of New South Wales. In 1993 she was appointed to the permanent staff of the Herbarium with responsibility for bryophytes and involvement in writing flora treatments of Asteraceae and Epacridaceae. Brown collected widely in Australia, Lord Howe Island, New Caledonia, Fiji, New Zealand, Malaysia, Papua New Guinea and Vanuatu. Her collections are in the National Herbarium of New South Wales.
