Raymond Marginson was appointed to the position of Vice-Principal of the University of Melbourne in 1965. In that role, he made an application in respect of a patent for an invention called the "Electrode for Human Cochlea" in 1983. The awarding of this patent was an important milestone in the development of the bionic ear (cochlear implant) which was the subject of research by a team led by Professor Graeme Clark at the university. Marginson remained in the role of Vice-Principal until his retirement in 1988.
<p>Raymond Marginson graduated with a Bachelor of Commerce from the University of Melbourne in 1946 before entering the commonwealth public service on 20 July 1948.</p>
