After arriving in Victoria in 1849 Eugene Fitzalan settled in Geelong, establishing a nursery business that ultimately failed. He moved to Queensland in 1859 and set up similar businesses in Bowen (1862-1887) and Cairns (1887-1897). In 1860 he was appointed Collector to the Queensland Government's expedition to investigate the area around the mouth of the Burdekin River. Specimens from this expedition were sent to Ferdinand von Mueller in Melbourne. These specimens are now in the National Herbarium of Victoria, as are other collections subsequently made by Fitzalan from many parts of Queensland. At times Fitzalan was paid by Mueller to collect for him. Companions on these collecting trips included people such as Frederick Bailey, John Dallachy, Edward Bowman and Amalie Dietrich. Fitzalan was one of the most productive and well-regarded collectors in Queensland in the period 1860-1900. Fitzalan moved to Brisbane in 1897.
