In 1962 he joined the staff of the CSIRO Division of Land Research and Regional Survey in the Mainland Survey Group (which later was incorporated into Australian National Herbarium). Here he worked on the identification of plant specimens for CSIRO staff across Australia and Papua New Guinea. He became adept at identification of specimens, especially in some of the large plant groups: Eucalyptus, Orchidaceae, Asteraceae and Cyperaceae. The family Gentianaceae was of particular interest to him. With other staff at the Herbarium he was involved in the development of the Herbarium's first computerised specimen database.
