Ian Smith, an expert in forest pathology, worked for the Victorian government and the University of Melbourne to research and develop strategies to limit the spread of soil-borne pathogens and to rehabilitate affected forests.
<p>Starting his professional career with the Research Branch of the Forests Commission of Victoria in 1977, Ian Smith has undertaken research as Forest Pathologist with Victorian government departments responsible for forest management and the University of Melbourne. His work focus was on the biology and control of plant pathogens in Pinus and Eucalyptus plantations and nurseries, and the productivity and ecology of native eucalypt forests, particularly the biology of the soil-borne pathogen Phytophthora cinnamomi. His research contributed to the development of management strategies and policies to limit the spread of P. cinnamomi and the rehabilitation of affected sites.</p>
<p>He has been involved in setting up and supervising several Forest Health Surveillance programs, including with the Cooperative Research Centre (CRC) for Forestry, and lead an eradication program for an exotic pine nematode in Victoria. Ian Smith has provided technical advice to Biosecurity Victoria, Biosecurity Australia and Plant Health Committee, and represented government departments on several national and international committees on forest health and biosecurity issues. Since 2000 he has lectured in Forest Pathology at the University of Melbourne in forest science and horticulture courses.</p>
