She is an expert in plant nutrition and has undertaken research on the nutrition of forest species (including Eucalyptus grandis, E. globulus and E. pilularis) defining requirements for nutrients and identifying relationships between nutritional status and pathogen susceptibility.

Marcia Lambert was employed by the Forestry Commission of NSW (later Forests NSW). In the latter years, she was a Senior Research Scientist and an Assistant Director of Research, followed by a position as Director of Forsci Pty Ltd. Her expertise covers plant nutrition and nutritional management of natural forests and plantations (both hardwood and softwood, including several eucalyptus species) and salinity. She has continued studies on plantation nutrition and also on the health of coastal Norfolk Island Pines. In 1986, she was elected to represent Australia and later the Pacific Region for the Board of IUFRO (International Union of Forest Research Organisations). She was the first woman elected to the Board of IUFRO since its inception in 1892.
