In 1965, Ross Florence was appointed as a Lecturer within the newly formed Department of Forestry at the Australian National University, and as Associate Professor in 1979. During his tenure at the ANU he lectured in forest ecology, silviculture, forest policy and the environment and was associated with many consultancy projects. Within the Asia-Pacific region he presented the first course in tropical forest silviculture at the Universiti Pertanian Malaysia; undertook studies on the development of the eucalypt in India and other countries; and visited China twice under the Australia-China Education Cooperation program. Dr Florence authored 120 publications and consultancy reports in areas of forest ecology, silviculture and multiple-use management, forest policy, and the productivity of plantation monocultures and their ecosystem processes.
