Much of his research focused on breeding of Pinus radiata in which he was a world leader. After the Forest Research Institue in Canberra (where Brown had been Research Scientist for some years) amalgamated with the CSIRO Division of Forest Research, he ultimately became Chief of the Division's successor, the Division of Forestry. He stepped down as Chief in 1992 to return to a research role.
