<abstract>John Hickey was born in Victoria and completed a Bachelor of Forest Science at the University of Melbourne in 1977. He joined the Tasmanian Forestry Commission in 1978, pursuing silvicultural research and forest planning. In the 1980s, he undertook significant research into the ecology and silviculture of temperate rainforests dominated by <span style="font-style:italic">Nothofagus</span> In his MSc thesis (University of Tasmania) on the floristic composition of silvicultural regrowth established after harvesting of old-growth wet eucalypt forest, he discovered similarities with regrowth that had established after wildfires. This was one of the first Australian studies to acknowledge an appropriate benchmark for silvicultural regrowth was against natural regrowth, rather than old-growth forest. From 1997-2008, John Hickey focussed on establishing a major silvicultural systems trial in wet eucalypt forest at the Warra Long Term Ecological Research site, which identified the aggregated form of variable retention harvesting as a viable alternative to clearfelling. Since 2010, John Hickey has been General Manager, Forest Management at Forestry Tasmania.</abstract>
