In 1915 he joined the Department of Agriculture and enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force later than year. He served on the Western Front and he is claimed to have been one of the Australians who lifted Baron von Richthofen from his destroyed airplane. He rejoined the Department of Agriculture in 1924. In 1926 he was appointed senior inspector and in 1934 an agricultural superintendent. Brake was remobilised in 1940 in the Royal Australian Artillery and commanded the Melbourne University Rifles. As superintendent, Blake's department developed improved cultivation methods and techniques. He chaired the Fames Competition Association for twenty years. He became president of the Victorian branch of the Australian Institute of Agricultural Science in 1938.
