In 1803, he sailed in the Calcutta on William Collins' expedition. In 1808, he sailed on the Porpoise. In 1809 he sailed to Derwent. After leaving the Porpoise, he sailed for India. In 1822, Hobbs returned to Van Diemen's Land. At the request of Lieutenant-Governor William Sorell who sought a more thorough analysis of the colony's coast line, Hobbs circumnavigated the island, locating ports, rivers and ideal land for settlement. Hobbs departed from Hobart Town on 5 February 1824 and completed the circumnavigation on 10 July.
