Gilbert Bogle graduated in physics from Victoria University College in Wellington, New Zealand, in 1946. He was employed as a laboratory assistant in 1945 and attended Oriel College, Oxford as a Rhodes Scholar in 1947. There he received his PhD and worked for two years at the Clarendon laboratory on paramagnetic resonance experiments at very low temperature. From 1953 he lectured in physics at the University of Otago in New Zealand and was appointed senior lecturer in 1955. He later moved to Sydney and was appointed as a senior research officer in the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation's division of physics. He began work with the cryogenics group in 1956 and recommenced his research on paramagnetic resonance. He was instrumental in the production of a maser amplifier for radio astronomy and highly regarded by many in the field. He was offered a two-year appointment in quantum electronics at the Bell Telephone Research Laboratories in New Jersey when he met a sudden death, surrounded in controversy involving scientific secrets and governmental conspiracies, shortly before his departure to the United States in 1963.
