He travelled around eastern Australia until 1884 when he left for New Guinea in 1885. He documented the massacres of the coast and criticised the government and missionaries for their actions in New Guinea. He travelled to and from New Guinea and Sydney multiple times, examining the delta of the Kikori River and travelling up the Iowa River to explore an area of nearly a hundred miles of the Purari area.Bevan's application for land ownership in the delta country was rejected by the British government and he retired, settling in Tasmania, Victoria, and Sydney. He was a respected member of the Geographical Society and published several papers.
