In 1921-1922 he worked for the Commonwealth Department of Health as bacteriologist at the emergency laboratory in Cairns, Queensland, during an outbreak of bubonic plague. Before returning to Melbourne in 1923 he worked as a microbiologist in Townsville. He was appointed as lecturer and demonstrator in veterinary pathology and bacteriology at the University of Melbourne. In 1925, he accepted the position of veterinary pathologist with the Western Australian Department of Agriculture. in 1928-1935 he was seconded to the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research. He achieved recognition for his contributions to disease management in livestock. He was principal at the animal health and nutrition laboratory at Hollywood from 1947-1959 and published with C. A. Gardner The toxic plants of Western Australia in 1956.
