In 1924 he visited sugar-producing centres including Cuba and Java on a travelling scholarship and worked in an engineering plant in Scotland. Bennett completed postgraduate studies at Louisiana State University in the US in 1926 and was appointed as the first mill technologist at the Bureau of Sugar Experiment Stations in Brisbane. He was transferred to Mackay and established a sugar-mill technology division and was appointed manager of the Racecourse Co-operative Sugar Mill in 1932. Due to personal and financial difficulties in the industry he resigned in 1947. He was successful as a chief chemist at Invicta sugar-mill at Giru in 1954 and became director of the Haughton Sugar Company.
