In 1934 he was employed by the Shell Co. of Australia Ltd and created a rod, 'Cobalide One', using his own research. It was claimed to be the first hard-facing alloy and used chromium carbide for its strength. In 1941 he began working at the Ministry of Munitions. In 1945, he registered his company, Cobalide (Industrial) Pty Ltd and commenced manufacturing the following year. In 1951, a site at Alexandria was selected for a factory and an office. Norman was a managing director and was involved in overseas markets and research. In 1954, he was a member of a trade mission to the Far East and received a gold medal for presenting a paper to the South African Institute of Welding in 1956. In 1963, his company received an award for outstanding export achievements from the Commonwealth government.
