Gregg Suaning obtained his PhD from the University of New South Wales. His work involved designing and testing a vision prosthesis system (a neurostimulator) to treat specific types of blindness. Suaning came to Australia in 1991. He worked at Johnson & Johnson Medical as a marketing systems specialist from 1991 to 1992. He then worked as prosthesis designer at Cochlear Limited from 1992 to 1997. There he designed neurostimulators for those suffering from chronic deafness and hearing impairments. In 1995 he became a lecturer at the Hunter Institute of Technology, NSW, teaching mechanical engineering. In 1996 he was a member of the team at Cochlear Limited that was awarded the Australian Institute of Engineers Engineering Design Awards for Engineering Innovation, Engineering Products and Manufacturing and the Bradfield Award for engineering works of exceptional merit and community worth. Suaning became a research scholar in the Graduate School of Biomedical Engineering of the Department of Ophthalmology at the University of New South Wales in 1996.
