Dr Sally Stewart-Wade obtained her PhD from the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (RMIT) in 1995. Her research focused on the biological control of the weed thornapple. Whilst studying, she received a Rural Industries Research and Development Corporation scholarship and an Australian postgraduate research award. From 1994 to 1996, she worked as a plant pathologist for the Department of Agriculture, Victoria. Here she researched the epidemiological and control aspects of the fungal disease in chestnuts. She was a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Guelph in Ontario, Canada, from 1996 to 1999. Stewart was a member of a large team that investigated biological control methods for broadleaf weeds, especially dandelions. In 2000, she took up a position as a research fellow in the Department of Agriculture and Food Systems in the Institute of Land and Food Resources at the University of Melbourne. Teaching and managing aspects of the department were some of her duties amongst creating programs to research the diseases in canola and potato.
