He joined a project between New Zealand and the CSIRO Division of Horticulture as a postdoctoral scientist from 1992 to 1994. There he investigated the process of senescence in broccoli and the way this was controlled by ethylene. He moved to the USA from 1994 to 1997 and became a postdoctoral scientist at the University of Arizona and then the University of Nevada. It was during this period that he investigated carotenoids and their function in photosynthesis. Pogson became an assistant professor in the Department of Plant Biology at Arizona State University from 1997 to 1999. He became a lecturer in the School of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at the Australian National University in 1999 before becoming a senior lecturer in 2001.
