She researched the central structure of radio quasars. Oshlack stayed with the Astrophysics Group at the University of Melbourne until later that year when she used mathematics to study genetics, having previously used it to study the heavens. This transfer was made at the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute where she worked as a research officer from 2003 to 2007 and then as a senior research officer from 2007 to 2011 in the Bioinformatics Division. She then moved to the Murdoch Children's Research Institute in Melbourne to head the bioinformatics research group.
