Frazer moved to Melbourne, Australia, to study autoimmunity and viral immunology and received clinical training at the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute of Medical Research. He was especially interested in human papilloma viruses (HPV). In 1985, he accepted a teaching position at the University of Queensland whilst also continuing his work on cervical cancer and HPV. In 1988, he was awarded a MD from the University of Melbourne.
