He obtained a postdoctoral fellowship at the CSIRO Division of Chemicals and Polymers to research how surfaces should be altered to allow specific molecules to be detected, and in 1997, was a recipient of an Alexander von Humboldt Research Fellowship to work at the Max Planck Institute of Colloids and Interfaces in Berlin. Here, utilising the self-assembly technique, he created a strategy to alter the surface of nano-sized colloid particles. The nanoparticles that resulted could then perform new roles (e.g. biosensors) and be utilised to create advanced materials. He has been awarded medals from the Royal Australian Chemical Institute and the Royal Society of Chemistry-Royal Australasian Chemical Institute in 2000 and 2001 respectively.
